Anti-ableism: the active effort, action, and practice to challenge or counteract ableism, inequalities, prejudices, and discrimination based on visible and invisible developmental, emotional, physical, or psychiatric (dis)ability — California Speech Language Hearing Association.

Ableism: a form of discrimination, prejudice, or act of exclusion against individuals with physical, mental, or developmental (dis)abilities that is characterized by the belief that these individuals need to be fixed or cannot function as full members of society — California Speech Language Hearing Association.

Anti- Racism“Anti-racism is the active process of identifying and eliminating racism by changing systems, organizational structures, policies and practices and attitudes, so that power is redistributed and shared equitably.” – NAC International Perspectives: Women and Global Solidarity 

Individual Racism“Individual Racism refers to an individual’s racist assumptions, beliefs or behaviours and is “a form of racial discrimination that stems from conscious and unconscious, personal prejudice” (Henry & Tator, 2006, p. 329). 

Interpersonal Racism“Interpersonal Racism is a component of individual racism and is defined as “directly perceived discriminatory interactions between individuals whether in their institutional roles or as public and private individuals” (Krieger, 1999, p. 301). 

Institutional RacismSolid Ground defines Institutional Racism as “the systematic distribution of resources, power and opportunity in our society to the benefit of people who are white and the exclusion of people of color.” 

Structural Racism Structural Racism is defined as “the normalization and legitimization of an array of dynamics – historical, cultural, institutional and interpersonal – that routinely advantage whites while producing cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for people of color” (Keleher & Lawrence, 2004 p. 1). 

Implicit Bias “also known as implicit social cognition, implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner (Kirwan Institute for Race and Ethnicity). 

Ally a non-Black person who identifies the ways that racism pervades every level of society and passively supports movements for racial equity. 

Co-conspirator a non-Black person who realizes racism’s cancerous impact on society and actively works alongside Black people towards their liberation.
